Inside: Conditions of Care by Samantha Killinen
We are proud to present “Inside: Conditions of Care,” featuring the work of Utah artist Samantha Killinen.
Killinen is no stranger to the southern Utah art community. Her work was featured in the 2025 Statewide Annual, hosted at the Southern Utah Museum of Art — and it drew visitors from across the state to Cedar City. Her ability to connect with audiences, locally and beyond, speaks for itself. We are thrilled that her debut solo exhibition has found its home in St. George.
This newest body of work grew from something personal: direct experience working inside the prison system. The works are soft in material and feeling — a deliberate choice for a subject that is usually anything but.
This is not an exhibition about solutions. It is an examination of contradiction: what it looks like when compassion and control exist in the same space, when comfort and confinement are part of the same daily reality. Most of us will never see the inside of a correctional facility. These works open that door, not to shock, but to humanize. They sit with complicated identities, messy histories, and situations that don't have clean endings.
Throughout the gallery, you will find words from incarcerated individuals who worked closely with the artist. We hope you will read them carefully, and carry them with you as you move through the space.
